8 July 1975 – An earthquake struck Pagan (Bagan) and destroyed many monuments in Burma. (Timeline internet).

1990-91 – General Khun Sa, a warlord in Burma who controlled 80% of the regions opium trade. In 1990 he was indicted in the US on federal drug charges but remained a fugitive. In mid 1991 he had deposited about $300 million in BCCI. The accounts were fed from Taiwan and Hong Kong.

1 Oct 1999 – Burmese embassy seizure. Burmese dissidents seized the Burmese embassy in Bangkok Thailand, taking 89 people hostage including one US citizen.

Nov 2001 – Two Pakistani nuclear scientists under investigation by the US for links to al-Qaeda. They arrived in Burma in early November 2001.

2002 – The Thailand based Shan human rights foundation filed a report. It said the military government in Myanmar raped at least 625 women and children in Shan states from 1996-2001. (Timeline internet).

19 May 2004 – A cyclone swept through western Myanmar. More than 140 people were reported dead or missing and about 18,000 homeless. (AP 28 May 2004).

29 Nov 2006 – Red Cross closing field offices in Myanmar. Up to 1,000 political prisoners being held. (wed 1.15am 9645khz VOA).

12 Feb 2007 – A report issued by a human rights group accused Myanmar’s military of killing raping and torturing ethnic Karen women over the past 25 years. (AP 12 Feb 2007).

May 2008 – Cyclone Nargis devastates large parts of Burma, killing about 130,000 people. Millions of people were affected. (Timeline internet).


3 May 2008 – A tropical cyclone slammed into Myanmar’s city of Yangon. About 138,000 people died or went missing. A deadly storm. (AP 4 May 2008).

11 May 2008 – In Myanmar a Red Cross boat carrying rice and water for Cyclone Nargis victims sank. Death toll about 28,000 a humanitarian catastrophe. (AP 11 May 2008).

12 May 2008 – Cyclone Nargis death toll 31,938 with 29,770 people missing. The first US flight of emergency supplies landed in Myanmar. (AP 12 May 2008).

14 May 2008 – Child traffickers preying on Burma victims says aid groups. Victims of cyclone Nargis UNICEF chief child protection officer in Burma was Anne Claire Dufay. (ABC news AFP Australia).

16 May 2008 – The EU aid chief said Myanmar’s junta refused foreign relief workers two weeks after the cyclone tragedy that killed more than 71,000 dead or missing. (AP 16 May 2008).

5 June 2008 – Amnesty international said Myanmar’s military regime forced cyclone survivors to do forced labor in exchange for food. T evicted displaced people from aid shelters. (AP 5 June 2008.

8 Mar 2011 – Authorities in Myanmar announced bans on slavery in the capital Naypyitaw, to curb disguised slavery. (AP 21 Mar 2011).
